NID Studio test Preparation and Syllabus
The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) is the entrance exam for the National Institute of Design (NID) and it is comprised of two stages. The first stage is objective and it is known as NID DAT (prelims). Basically, it is a written test in which students need to demonstrate their knowledge of:
- Drawing theory: Scaling and proportions, light and shade, perspective, and other fundamentals.
- Design theory: Elements and principles, composition, finesse.
- Color theory: the color wheel and the meaning of colors.
- Quantitative skills: Math and physics
- Verbal abilities: English comprehension, communicative skills, vocabulary
The second stage is subjective and it is called NID DAT (mains) and then this stage too is divided into two sections. The first is the Studio Test which will evaluate candidates based on:
- Hands-on model making
- Doodling (believe it or not)
- Thought and idea development
- Manipulation of the materials given
- Finesse and overall presentation
- Creativity and innovation applied to problem solving and other situations
The next section of the second stage is the personal interview in which students will be asked a series of questions based on the specialization they want to pursue and where they will hand in the portfolio they’ve been asked to compile. All the information mentioned above comes from the NID syllabus that is available on the internet and which delves a little deeper into the evaluation method and the areas of knowledge needed.
NID Studio Test Preparation
Preparing for the first stage of the NID DAT might feel like it is slightly easier than preparing for the second stage. Though the questions vary from year to year, through sample papers students are able to get a general idea of what will be asked of them. The same is not true of the Studio Test. Based on the NID studio test syllabus, it could be said that candidates will need to put into practice all the knowledge they demonstrated having in the first stage. Students that have already undergone the NID entrance exam and are currently studying, report that the questions asked and problems posed might depend on the specialization. My recommendations are:
- Interview senior students from the same discipline you’re trying for. They’ll be able to tell you more or less what is expected of you in the studio test.
- Then you should take your research to the internet. There you should be able to find people that have shared the past years studio test questions.
- Practice the same exercises you already know about, from what you gathered on the internet. And then, come up with your own. Ask parents, sibling, relatives, and friends, to help you come up with ideas for exercises. Then you can ask them to judge the outcome, but you should examine whatever you created objectively and note what you could improve for the next exercise. You should use a chronometer so you can work on making your creations/solutions to the problems, products, stories, models, poster, whatever with finesse and good overall presentation, all within the allotted time.
